Guest Tweeting and the Recession

On 25 June, the lack of universal wi-fi meant I was unable to tweet with my own ipod touch at the UK Resource Centre for Women in SET’s event, Women and the Recession.  A bit of quick thinking meant I was able to guest tweet for the UKRC,  and experience the iphone for the first time.

It was a surreal experience tweeting actually for a reason and trying to represent myself, an organisation and remember my position as a civil servant.  Given some of the very strong views expressed at the event, I guess I knew that this was going to be a task and a half.  I did enjoy the experience – even though, after the previous day’s tweeting from the science communciation conference, it was a bit disappointing not to have other tweeters to bounce off.  And again there was the lingering feeling that I would somehow look as if I wasn’t giving full attention to the key speakers at the event.

Anyway, the event had speakers from a Research Council,  a female engineer and an economist, who made the biggest impression on me as she tried to explain how our economy’s concept of money is not actually related to actual money that we could put in our pockets.  There was some talk around the importance of networking, which I personally wouldn’t subscribe to.  I agreed with one speaker who argue that perhaps the current recessionary climate isn’t necessarily the best time to be thinking in “gender-related” terms.  That said, I do agree it would be a shame if businesses did suddenly use the recession as an excuse to rein in their more flexible working practices etc.

I’ve added my guest tweeting twitter stream below:
